Growing your business is probably the single most significant challenge you face today.  In the midst of the economic reset of 2008 to 2012, the new normal means that holding on to the status quo of what worked for the first eight years of the new millennium will certainly ensure the demise of your business by 2012.

As the graphic below depicts, what it takes to grow your business changes through economic cycle.  During the Grow stage, most organizations are not focused on strategy, leadership, or lean operations - they have come up with some innovative idea and are out selling it.

At some point in the natural growth cycle of a business, or due to uncontrollable environmental factors - such as what we have all experienced in the past three years - to survive, the business must move into the Reinvent stage.  What you started doing at the beginning of the cycle isn't working as well, cost structures are out of line with top line growth, products and services have seen margin erosion and/or commoditization, and all of the infrastructure that enabled the organization to remain stable or grow during the Maintain stage are on the brink of moving from the asset column to the liability column of the ledger.
