The Core Fundamentals of Talent Management

People are the lifeblood of every organization and successful organizations are able to create a reliable pipeline of talent necessary for continued success. This is where talent management comes in. Talent management is the complex discipline by which an organization commits to hiring, managing, developing, and retaining talented employees.

Talent management as a process is divided into five categories that all mutually reinforce and inform each other: Talent Identification and Acquisition, Onboarding and Engagement, Learning and Development, Performance Management, and Workforce Planning. Below is a brief synopsis of each category.

Talent Identification and Acquisition

 

Developing a hiring process that guarantees the right talent is hired into an organization.

Onboarding and Engagement

 

Introducing new hires to their role and the company in a way that sets them up for success.

Learning and Development

 

Building skills, knowledge, and behaviors that lead to strong job performance.

Performance Management

 

Measuring the skills, knowledge, and behavior of employees to help continue to develop and coach talent.

Workforce Planning

 

Taking business objectives and transforming them into talents needed to allow an organization to be successful.

 

Contrary to popular belief, talent management is not exclusively a function of HR.  Effective talent management is the responsibility of organizational leadership. HR departments may be tasked with leading the search for talent and coordinating the hiring process, but this is after hiring managers define their needs. A clear definition of what good talent looks like will help the hiring process flow more smoothly.

The role of an organizational leader, however, doesn’t end there. Although HR may be responsible for guiding the onboarding process while also creating and delivering training, they are not responsible for the success of talent in an organization. Leadership needs to be equally involved in things like defining and delivering on company culture and values while elaborating on what needed job performance needs to look like. Leadership responsibility is key in successful talent management.
